On the Carlsbad People, Purpose, and Impact Podcast, Bret Schanzenbach speaks with Dr. Bryan Brockett, the principal of Carlsbad High School. Dr. Brockett has held various roles in education, from his first job out of college as the kindergarten playground supervisor to teaching elementary Spanish to ultimately serving as the principal of Carlsbad High School.
Dr. Brockett is passionate about partnering with his staff, the community, and the students in order to create extraordinary opportunities through education. His holistic approach is fueled by his belief that extracurricular activities have just as much impact on students as what they learn in the classroom. In fact, Carlsbad High School’s TV program was recently awarded the Pacemaker Award, which is the Pulitzer Prize for student journalism. The Carlsbad High School dance team not only offers ways for dancers to compete nationwide, but also to serve their community and mentor younger students. The high school’s athletic teams, speech and debate program, and choir are all top programs in the state. It’s no wonder why Dr. Brockett received a CBAD Administrator of the Year Award. In this episode, Dr. Brockett shares his journey into education, the academic and extracurricular opportunities Carlsbad High School provides its students, the positive things the school learned due to COVID, and the importance of having an amazing team.
